It doesn't matter if you are friendly with other racial people, while locked up you are expected to stay within the social pecking order of your skin color. If you are a white inmate you will hang out with the other white inmates. If Mexican same thing, stick with your own kind. Racism stinks as a whole but these are fundamental rules in lock up.
Jail survival first time tips #2 - Keep your personal life to yourself. Don't talk about your life outside of the joint. Keep the names, addresses, jobs, and other information of your family and friends strictly to yourself. Don't talk about your personal beliefs if they include race, politics or religion. Another thing is to keep your outside life completely shut off to inquiring inmates. They will use information you give them against you and rumors spread fast in lock down.
Life in prison first time tips #3 - If someone offers you a free gift do not accept it. Nothing is free in lockdown. If an inmate offers you an item off his food tray you might owe him a hundred dollars for it. Inmates will mess with you and will use things against you as leverage. If you accept a gift or any special item simply refuse and give it back. Do not accept anything for free. Everything has a price.
